Why Dolly Parton meant so much to Black communities: Black stars remember a one-of-a-kind icon
Through her career, personality and philanthropy, Dolly Parton built a legacy that transcended music, race and genre.
This week, communities are grieving the death of country icon, community champion, and philanthropist Dolly Parton. Throughout her career, the 80-year-old style icon became a beloved figure in pop culture. However, the “Jolene” singer held a special place in the hearts of Black communities for a number of reasons. While many recognized her for bold, often bedazzled, sartorial choices and her country catalog, Parton was known for giving back, especially to underserved communities.
For instance, after Whitney Houston covered her 1974 song “I Will Always Love You,” Parton used some of the $10 million she received in royalties to invest in a Black neighborhood in Nashville. Purchasing a commercial complex in the area, the country singer said she considered it “the house that Whitney built.” Similarly, she was a supporter of the Black Lives Matter movement following the death of George Floyd, and reportedly spent years donating band uniforms to high schools in Tennessee.

Parton was also among the first public figures to advocate for people living with HIV and AIDS in the 80s, and was invested in inspiring children to love reading through her organization, Imagination Library, a free book-gifting program that mails one age-appropriate book each month to children from birth until they turn five years old, including audio and braille books for children who are blind or visually impaired. This work, paired with her charming personality and consistent respect and support for Black artists from Whitney Houston to Three 6 Mafia to Beyoncé, is part of why Black communities love her so deeply. In an often divisive world, Parton managed to operate in a way that made it impossible for anyone to put her in just any box other than her own, making her an inspiration to many.
